First Steps
On July 20, 1969, humanity left its first footprint on another world.
When Apollo 11's lunar module touched down, an estimated 600 million people stopped to watch. Neil Armstrong's first step off the ladder turned a centuries-old dream into a single, grainy black-and-white frame — and a sentence schoolchildren still memorize today.
What's easy to forget is how close it came to not happening: the guidance computer was throwing alarms, and Armstrong took manual control with seconds of fuel to spare.
